Here's XML ... Here's Your Relational Database ...

ANY QUESTIONS?

Well, the best way I can describe XML is inevitable! We had to have some way of transporting database information over the WEB without using binary formats and proprietary architectures. Enter XML: a text based protocol for transportation of both structure and data content of our beloved database.

Now that we've settled the "why" part of the issue, let's get to the "how" business.

  • Use Visual Basic and ActiveX Data Objects (ADO) to turn any data source, such as Microsoft Access, into an XML file.
  • Use SQL Server 2000 and its XML features.
  • Use Rick Strahl's wwXML utility to turn a Visual FoxPro table into XML.

The list can go on, but this should give you an idea. The choice of migrating your databases to XML may have been made by a business need, but your support of it is crucial nonetheless.
